Emetophobia
Emetophobia is the the clinical name for the fear of vomiting. Most of the time it pertains to the people themselves vomiting, but it can also be the fear of witnessing other people vomiting or an intense fear of getting sick and feeling nausea. People who have this kind of phobia are called emetophobes, and it is one of the most common phobias in the world. It is often related to other kinds of clinical fears, specially the fear of certain foods. As a side effect of the “vomit fear”, people often develop different kinds of eating disorders, and there is also a higher rate of obsessive-compulsive people among emetophobes.

Oftentimes people start to constantly worry in an obsessive manner about hygiene, cleanliness of foods, gems and bacteria. They do this in order to protect themselves of getting sick and eventually having to vomit. Some emetophobes will avoid public toilets because of the gems that they associate with these places. Since they won’t go to a public toilet, they also often won’t go to restaurants or other public gatherings, which can have a very isolating impact on their social lifes.
Just imagine never accepting or extending an invitation from other people to go out together. For most people, this means that they will gradually lose contact with friends and family members, or at least weaken the ties. Feelings of loneliness and social isolation often are the end result of this.
In fact, this fear can really take over a person’s life, not only restricting their social activities and greatly reducing the kinds of places they are able to visit, but also their internal lives, their mental worlds. This is often described as even worse by many emetophobes. Just imagine constantly having to think about nausea and vomiting and being reminded of this fear of throwing up. How enjoyable do you think your life would be?
It is important to realize that emetophobes are not just picky, they simply have no control over their obsessive thoughts and fears and worries.
Medical experts and psychologists still are unable to find out what causes emetophobia. In some cases, childhood abuses and extremely bad experiences with vomiting can have triggered these fears, but in many cases there just is no known cause. If a child for example had an alcoholic father who often vomited heavily, and the child witnessed and got traumatized by this, some people subconsciously associate the intense states of fear and anxiety that they have felt with the act of vomiting and that is how this phobia starts. But overall, there seem to be a wide variety of causing agents.
What’s more is that emetophobes often also have a general fear of losing control or not being in control of a situation. Further studies will have to be conducted to find out whether there is any significance to this finding or not, the data that is currently available is not conclusive.
Oftentimes people who are afraid of vomiting keep this as a secret to themselves and do not tell other people about it, because it is such a “weird” condition. However, recruiting help is essential if you do not want to let this fear take over your life.
